The shape of it

Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Pentecostal, non-denominational, Church of Christ, Lutheran, Episcopal, Assemblies of God, and the newer congregations in the strip centers and the old storefronts on Texas Avenue and North Main. Two Catholic parishes carry most of the Spanish-language Mass; several evangelical and Pentecostal congregations preach in Spanish or both, and a couple of the Baptist churches have a Spanish service at a separate hour. A mosque serves the area's Muslim families; Baytown has its own synagogue, Congregation K'nesseth Israel, and the nearest temple is on the Houston side, with the distance on the list. The plants brought people from everywhere, and the churches show it.

What the list has

Every congregation we've found — 28 at last count, more coming with each pass — with address, website, service and prayer times, the language of the services, and the community programs they post: food pantries, clothes closets, ESL, youth nights, seniors' lunches, recovery meetings, the crawfish boils in spring, the Vacation Bible Schools in June. The times are pulled from the churches' own sites and the date beside them says how fresh. If yours is wrong or missing, the form on the page goes to a person, and it goes up the same week.

The community side

In Baytown the churches are the social safety net that the county isn't: the food pantries, the back-to-school drives, the disaster response after a storm (the church parking lots are where the supplies land and the chainsaw crews meet), the ESL classes, the funeral meals, the rides to the doctor. If you're new and need something, the church nearest you is the first call even if you don't go to it, and they'll help without asking whether you do.

Sunday

Traffic on Garth and 146 is lighter Sunday morning than any weekday, and heavier at noon when the services let out and the whole town goes to Tex-Mex. That's the timing to know: eat before eleven-thirty or after one-thirty, and don't try to park downtown at twelve-fifteen.

The calendar

Church events that are open to the public — concerts, festivals, boils, pancake breakfasts, the Christmas programs, Grito Fest's Mass, the Easter sunrise services on the bay — go on the site's calendar as they're posted. The churches with online calendars feed it automatically; the others get picked up by hand when they announce, and the form works for those too.

Weddings, funerals, and the rest

The churches with halls rent them; the list notes which. The funeral homes are on the services page. For a wedding with a view, the Hyatt and Yepez are the two places the town uses, and the churches are the rest.
