In Baytown. Yepez Vineyard. The only working vineyard in the area — tables between the vines, a tasting room, live music on weekends when they book it, private events that close it some Saturdays. The grapes are the ones that survive Gulf Coast heat and humidity — the hybrids the state's growers use down here, not the ones you know from the label — and the wine is honest about it. Sunday afternoon is the hour; hours and the events calendar are on its page, pulled nightly.
Within an hour. - The Bluff Dale and Hill Country wineries are not near. Ignore the search results that say otherwise; they're three hours. - Haak Vineyards, Santa Fe (Galveston County) — about an hour. The Gulf Coast's established winery: blanc du bois, a madeira-style wine they're known for, a real tasting room, tours. The day trip. - The Kemah and Galveston tasting rooms — 35 to 50 minutes. Wine bars and tasting rooms pouring Texas and elsewhere; not vineyards, but a glass with a view. - The Bryan-College Station and Brenham wineries — two hours. The weekend, not the afternoon.
What grows here. Blanc du bois, black Spanish (Lenoir), and the newer hybrids bred for humidity and Pierce's disease, which kills the European vines this close to the coast. Expect crisp whites, a port-style red, and growers who'll tell you exactly why the cabernet you asked for isn't on the list. Yepez is the local proof.
The drinks list has the rest. The site's drinks guide covers the daiquiri, the bars, the VFW, and the Sunday rules; the beaches page covers the drive to the coast tasting rooms.
