Can you swim in the water?

The bays, the bayous, the ship channel, and the two water parks. Which is which.

The water parks: yes

Pirates Bay and Calypso Cove are the swimming in Baytown — treated, lifeguarded, seasonal, on the water-parks page. Memorial Day to the end of August; the little one for the little ones; both close for lightning.

The bays: mostly not, and not for swimming

Galveston Bay's arms around Baytown — Burnet, Crystal, Scott, Tabbs — are brown, shallow, warm, and busy with boats. People wade, fish, kayak, and paddleboard; they don't swim, and the reasons are practical rather than dramatic: the bottom is mud, the visibility is nothing, the boat traffic is real, and after a heavy rain the bacteria counts climb for days. The state's beach-watch program tests the Gulf beaches and the county tests the bays; we link the readings. There's no beach here — the closest sand is Sylvan Beach in La Porte, twenty-five minutes over the bridge, and then Galveston.

The ship channel: never

Tankers, currents, the ferry's wake, and the plants' outfalls. Nobody swims in the channel and nobody should. Fishing from the ferry landing is fine; that's as close as you get, and the deckhands will tell you the same.

The bayous: kayaks, not swimming

Cedar Bayou and Goose Creek are slow, brown, and full of catfish and the occasional alligator — the Nature Center's marsh has them too, which is why the boardwalk has railings. Paddle them from the launches on the trails page; don't swim them. After a rain, stay off for a week; the current is the one thing they have, and the debris comes down with it.

The alligator question

Yes, there are alligators in the marshes, the bayous, and sometimes the retention ponds in the newer subdivisions. They are not interested in you; they are interested in your dog, which is one more reason the Nature Center doesn't allow dogs and you keep the leash short at Bayland. Don't feed them — it's illegal and it's how they learn people mean food — don't approach them, and call the city's animal services or the state game warden if one's somewhere it shouldn't be. Nesting season is spring; that's when they're least patient.

Vibrio and the rest

Warm bay water in summer carries bacteria that can infect an open cut; if you wade with a wound, you'll regret it. Rinse after the bay, and go to urgent care if a cut gets red and hot fast — the ERs here see it every summer.

The pools

The city's aquatics and the private pools — the hotels', the gyms', the neighborhood HOAs' — are on the directory. The Calypso Cove pool is the public one for lap swimming when it's open; the rest of the year it's the gyms, and the hotel pools on Garth if you're staying.
